‘Aripan’, to smear, commonly known as Rangoli, is generally practised in and around the Mithila region of India. It involves smearing the ground with cow dung for purification and bringing out positive energy. It is generally drawn in the front yard of the house and is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the family.
Drawing Aripans is an everyday ritual in households all over India, however distinct Aripans are drawn on particular days of festivities and special occasions.
