In the Mithila art form, we find various ways or styles of paintings which are expressed differently, namely ‘Bharani’, ‘Kachini’, ‘Kohbar’, ‘Tantric’ and ‘Godna’.
The Godna art form can also be understood as a body tattoo art form. Tattooing is an age-old tradition in India, particularly practised in the tribal regions of the country. The motifs used in the Godna form are inspired from nature. This art form was later translated from bodies to paper. The background generally has a cow dung base and the shapes and figures are outlined with a nib pen.
